Daddy you just wouldn’t believe it!

Published October 23, 2012 by jeaniel47

My dad passed away in 1980 when I was only 25. He didn’t get to meet my husband, my children or my grandchildren. He would have smiled from ear to ear to have met them.

Today we were driving by some new wind towers being erected and it made me think, my dad never saw…

One of the massive wind towers that now speckled the fields of Iowa

A cell phone

Cable TV

A remote control for a TV

100 channels to choose from (damn, we had 3 channels and there was always something to watch, now we have a hard time)

He never had a snow blower (the three of us each had a shovel to clean the driveway in the winter)

He never owned a brand new car (I learned to drive on the first “automatic” he ever owned…it has push buttons to change the transmission)

Ne never saw a refrigerator that made ice in the door, instead of hand making it in trays

He never saw a landline phone without a cord (we had a party line and had to share the usage of the phone)

No VCR, DVD or CDs

He never had central air

He did have lots of fresh vegetables out of his garden

He worked hard every day of his life

He could let me go and play and didn’t have to worry if I was safe or not

He was married to the same woman for over thirty years

He displayed the American flag proudly and always voted in every election

I was eight years old when he told me he had paid off a medical bill for a surgery I had when I was three

He paid the dentist $80 dollars when I was sixteen for a root canal. It was his whole weeks pay check.

He dug a hole by hand when my dog died and marked the grave for me

He called me his “capin, after Kaptain Kangaroo

He taught me to drive when I asked

I was his only child….I was loved…I miss him….

Voting and the Election

Published October 7, 2012 by jeaniel47

I listen to the news and everyone going back and forth about who should win the election. Who will be the best president? Who will really help our country? This one does this, this one does that…. on and on and on… Each person who is blessed to live in this wonderful country has to make up their own mind about who they will vote for. I will not give anyone my personal opinions about who I think will be the best president. But I will tell you that it drives me crazy that people do not go out and vote. It is your privilege, your right as an American to go and vote! I have voted in every election since I was 18, probably thanks to my parents who made sure that I knew voting day was a big deal. I remember being a little girl and my dad took me into the voting booth with him and he showed me how he placed his vote. Thanks Dad. I was watching and learning.

People in so many countries have died trying to get the chance to be able to make choices in their life, but in our country, people sit at home and complain, instead of getting up out of their chairs and taking the 15 minutes to make a difference.

GO AND VOTE THIS YEAR! Make a difference!

Somebody is Out to Get Me!

Published September 29, 2012 by jeaniel47

Yesterday I was driving to a computer class, going 45 on a four lane highway and twice a car turned right in front of me.

Today driving back from the lake, I have the right of way, going to make a left hand turn. There is a pickup at the stop sign on my left and a car at the stop sign on my right. First the pickup pulls out in front of me (I am literally turning the steering wheel to turn). I get stopped and do not hit him and I’ll be darned if the other car doesn’t pull out and try to go cross the highway exactly where I am stopped.

Then we go to Sam’s club. I have all of my items in the car, so I put the cart away. I am walking behind a car who decides to back up. It I had not put my old butt into high gear, she would have run me over!

From there I drive two blocks. I am in the left lane going to turn left. There is a car in the right lane, (right turn only lane) and (I bet you can guess by now) the car in the right lane, turns left right in front of me!

Now I am sitting in my recliner and refuse to go anywhere else today!

If you know me at all you know that “47” is my favorite number. It has been my favorite for 25 years. It all started when every time I turned around you heard the number 47. How many people were at the party – 47. It is 47 degrees outside. Still if you listen to TV you will see and hear 47 a lot. Apartment # 47. Precinct 47. Just listen and you will see. I LOVE writing. It is nothing I ever thought I would do, much less actually write seven books. I find it extremely relaxing and have to say that I have never had writers block. The words just seem to flow onto the pages. I will never write the great American novel and I know that and am OK with that. I write simple, easy to read stories, and before I am finished with one I already have an idea what the next one will be. In a perfect world, this is what I would do for a living, but unfortunately few people are acutally able to make a living writing. Still, it is something I can say that I have done and no one can take that away from me. I made the choice to do it, not just think about it. It is a choice I am glad that I made. Happy Reading!
